Trazodone is an antidepressant that belongs to a group of drugs called serotonin receptor antagonists and reuptake inhibitors (SARIs). While trazodone is not a true member of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) class of antidepressants, it does still share many properties of the SSRIs.

Trazodone, primarily prescribed as an antidepressant, is also commonly used off-label for various other conditions. Some off-label uses include:
- Insomnia: Low doses of trazodone are often used to treat sleep disorders due to its sedative effects.
- Anxiety Disorders: It can be prescribed to manage generalized anxiety or other anxiety-related conditions.
- Chronic Pain: Trazodone may help alleviate pain in patients with fibromyalgia or other chronic pain syndromes.
- PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder): It is sometimes used to help manage symptoms like nightmares or sleep disturbances.
- Alcohol Dependence: Trazodone is occasionally used to treat sleep disturbances in people recovering from alcohol dependence.

- Agitation in dementia: Agitation means that a person is restless and worried, and they aren’t able to settle down
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): ADHD often begins in childhood and can persist into adulthood. It may contribute to low self-esteem, troubled relationships, and difficulty at school or work. Symptoms include limited attention and hyperactivity. Treatments include medication and talk therapy.
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): a long-lasting disorder in which a person experiences uncontrollable and recurring thoughts (obsessions), engages in repetitive behaviors (compulsions), or both.
- Bipolar Disorder (as a Sleep Aid)
- Fibromyalgia : a chronic (long-lasting) disorder that causes pain and tenderness throughout the body, as well as fatigue and trouble sleeping.
- Nerve pain : also called neuralgia or neuropathic pain,
These off-label uses are based on the drug’s effects on neurotransmitters, particularly serotonin, and its sedative properties.
